Strawberry Banana Smoothie

I’m a Mom, which means I’m kind of like a grownup.  I LOVE being a Mom, but being a grownup? That has taken a bit of getting used to. Being all grownup and stuff means you have to do adult things. You know, like – get a real job, pay bills, do your own laundry, make your bed…

Totally sucks.

I mean, some things are cool. I get to wear high heels. And they fit. I don’t look like this anymore:

I can sashay my ass up and down the block in 4 inch heels without the risk of cracking my skull wide open.

I no longer have a bedtime. I get to eat all the Oreos and Kit-Kats I desire. I’m old enough to vote, no one tells me to stop slouching and I can make all the faces I want because – guess what? It doesn’t really stay that way.

Still… This grownup business can get daunting at times. Sometimes it’s just way cooler to be a carefree kid.

Can I share a few things with you?

I’m afraid of the dark. Like deathly afraid. I’m forced to keep my “Mom Cool” having to constantly reassure my kids there’s nothing to be afraid of, yet I shake in my boots if the lights go out. We leave the TV on all night. I make it seem it’s their idea. It’s really mine. My idea… I’m afraid of the boogie monster… And ghosts…

For real…

Strange noises terrify me. Actually, it’s not the noise, but what may result from the strange noise.

Shameful moment: I once heard a noise and out of impulse I asked my 10 year old son to check, to which he angrily replied; “BUT I’M THE KID!!”…

Total reality check…

And I never did figure out what made that noise.

One can say I’m not ready to be an adult; yet here I am. I’m doing the adult mommy thing, and though I don’t rock the grownup deal, I kinda rock as a mom. You know, once you overlook the potential for child endangerment and what-not.

I’m not sure what makes me a rocking mom. The kids say I rock and I’m inclined to believe them. Could it be because I bake them cookies? I bake a lot of cookies. Perhaps it’s because I don’t mind busting out a rendition of  Madonna’s “Material Girl” with my little girl. It could very well be the all-out Nerf gun wars. Ah, maybe it’s because I let my son dribble his basketball in the house, and allow my little girl to jump on the bed.

I don’t know… Whatever it is, they’re happy I’m their mama.

It’s the Mom show 24/7 and it’s always been fun; challenging, but fun.

Even the semi-hard stuff; the stuff you have to figure out on your own.

  • Patiently explaining a math problem my kid doesn’t understand; having googled it 3 minutes before because I HATE math. Dude, I can barely add and I have to explain this?
  • The countless nights nursing coughs, ear infections, and tummy aches. Doling out meds, wiping snotty noses and getting doused with projectile vomit.
  • Consoling my kid when he’s crying out a problem I can’t solve; a problem that is his entire world.

Being a mom has thrust me into adulthood; has allowed me to evolve personally, and emotionally. Mom is what I identify myself as, even before I identify myself as Mrs. M.O.B. I’ve learned to put my personal shit aside at times and make it about them. I was born to be a mother – and every single moment of that has been worth it.

I’ve given pancreas crushing hugs, and have received and given my share of sloppy kisses. Nothing has beaten the feeling of walking through my door and hearing; “HI MOM!! I’M SO HAPPY TO SEE YOU – SO HAPPY YOU’RE HERE!”

I’ve been a mom for almost 11 years, and though it hasn’t been easy – parenting doesn’t come with DVD – I can’t picture my life as anything but. The adult deal I’m still getting used to; but the Mom show? That’s been rocking my channel since day one.

So what am I doing for Mother’s Day? Not a damn thing, that’s what. No cooking, no chores, no problem solving… I’m off that day; dusting off and putting up my sign. I’m going reap the rewards of being a mommy with a strawberry banana smoothie, and breakfast in bed. I’ve already put in my order and have written specific smoothie making instructions.

That’s my Mother’s Day gift to you, by the way – And if you’re not a mom, a great smoothie in your arsenal can never be viewed as a bad thing. Make it for your mama. I’m sure she’ll appreciate a lil’ smoothie love.
