There are times where I carry an inordinate amount of guilt in my heart. It’s the sort of guilt that pushes me to eat 3 bags of gummy bears in one sitting – And it’s not until I am well into my 4th bag, the one I am hungrily holding onto with an iron-clad grip, that I realize… I am destroying myself.
I’d like to say the source of my guilt is unjustified; but the truth is, in my mind, it never is. I feel guilt over every single little thing; whether or not it actually compromises my level of moral standard is of the most part, immaterial to me. I’m guilty and as such, I take full responsibility.
And so I destroy myself at times. I play crying martyr and flog myself by stuffing Giant Chewy Sweet Tarts and Gummy Bears until I’m literally vibrating in place. I eat Nutella by the container-full. I can polish off a giant bag of chips like its nobody’s business. I have seen, or thought I’ve seen my reflection at the bottom of a quart container of ice cream.
Then I feel further guilt over the destruction of self.
I’m trying to change that. Of course I will probably never stop feeling guilt – There is just no way. This is how I’ve been programmed and its going to take a miracle or at least another 10 years for me to stop bearing the weight of the world on my shoulders.
The spinach, pineapple, and banana smoothie situation. I know, some of you are all, “Spinach… Eewww! Spinach belongs in salads!!” And its true, it does – But it also belongs in between grilled cheese sandwiches, between chicken cutlets and mozzarella, and in your smoothies. Just look at spinach as the leaves in your edible floral bouquet.
Spinach has all sorts of vitamins, vitamins you need, all provided by La Madre Naturaleza. Pineapple lends acidity, sweetness, and tropical flair. Make sure find yourself a ripe pineapple – The fruit is actually sweet enough where you minimally taste the spinach, if at all, and the bananas are mostly to thicken this jammy a little bit.
Add coconut water or almond milk, although I went with good old fashioned water and blended that sucka till smooth. You can strain it, but you’d be losing some fiber, and nothing brings forth more guilt than sitting in the toilet for 25 minutes with nothing but your thoughts. Get yourself one of those bubble tea straws and stay regular. Trust me.
This smoothie. You need this. Totally counterbalances that bucket o’ fried chicken you just wolfed down. Well… Not exactly, but it may help you live with a lot less guilt.
Spinach, Pineapple, and Banana Smoothies
- 2 cups ripe pineapple chopped
- 2-3 cups of loosely packed spinach
- 2 medium ripe bananas
- 3 cups of cold water
- In a blender combine pineapple, spinach, bananas and water. Blend until smooth. Alternatively, you can combine all ingredients in a bowl and blend until smooth with a hand immersion blender. Once blended, strain (optional) and serve with crushed ice.
