Last night, while trying to decompress in a near comatose state, I was watching The Big Bang Theory. Love that show, by the way. In this episode Raj states he’s lonely and asks Sheldon for a hug. Sheldon slams the door in his face, then later wonders what color loneliness should be, as there is no color associated with loneliness. Eventually they both agree that Orange ought to be the color of loneliness.

I’m not sure I agree. If loneliness should have a color it ought to be black. Or brown; something dark and abysmal. Orange is just way too vibrant to be associated with loneliness.

This color-to-feeling situation got me thinking. Maybe we have this feeling color spectrum wrong.

Why should green be envy?

Or blue sadness?

Or red be anger?

Why do we have to assign a color to feelings at all? Why can’t we assign them cocktails?

Today I encourage you to feel Blackberry Beet Agave Negro. This cocktail is many feelings. And today I just want to feel, you dig?

I found a variation of this cocktail in the Food & Wine website. With blackberries, lime, and tequila reposado, you can’t blame me for being intrigued. I however, felt it needed a bit more drama. More flavor, more oomph, some she-bang, a lil’ more feels. And that’s where beets came in. Not pureed beets, which would overpower the cocktail, but a hint of sweet earthiness. And that’s where a beet simple syrup rolls into view.

Beets are cooked down in water and sugar until the syrup is a “KAPOW!” red. I allowed the beets to steep a bit and wrinkle like a kid in a bubble bath.

After straining the syrup I built my drink. To be straight I had no idea how this cocktail would taste. I mean beets in cocktails with blackberries and lime? Where the hell was I going with this? Yet in my head and on paper it made total sense. Plus when something is in my head I need to let it out. Or I’ll explode. And you don’t need to see Mrs. M.O.B. bits all over the place.

It paid off, homies. Cause it works. Works, works, works!!! Once you get a feel for that juicy tartness of blackberries and lime, you’re a goner. Reposado tequila goes down smooth, and at the very end is a sweet earthy beet kick in the tonsils. It’s refreshing and radiant and deep, deep red. You’re gonna want a pitcher of this jammy.

It’s all the damn feelings rolled into a tight little ball. A ball that eventually grows, glows, and explodes all up in you. – Feel this cocktail when you don’t know what the f*** to feel. Feel Blackberry Beet Agave Negro.

Beet simple syrup

  • 1 heaping cup chopped beets
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar

For the cocktail

  • 5-6 blackberries
  • 1 ounce 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • half a lime sliced in half
  • 1 ounce 2 tablespoons beet simple syrup
  • 2 ounces 1/4 cup reposado tequila
  • 2-3 ice cubes
  • 1.5 ounce 3 tablespoons chilled club soda
  • 1 lime wedge for garnish
  • 1 blackberry for garnish


Make the beet simple syrup

  • In a small saucepan, combine beets, water, and sugar. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to low and allow to simmer until the beets have shrunk and the
  • syrup is a deep red. Remove from heat and allow to steep for about 40 minutes. Strain into a glass jar with a tight fitting lid. Makes about 1 1/2 cups of simple syrup, enough for several cocktails.
