I wonder: If my husband says I’m once, twice, three times a lady… Is he calling me fat?

What does it really mean to “Pump up the jam?” Is this a reference to preserves?

When I am told “Stop!”. Is it in the name of love, or is it Hammertime? I prefer Hammertime; because if it’s Hammer time, I’d like to spend at least a minute doing the bump, bump, bump….

Why can’t I get a Funky Cold Medina at a bar? Or a house party, even?

These are the questions that puzzle me. Legitimate questions I wish someone would answer. Is that weird? Am I weird? Am I reading too much into these things?

Perhaps, yet I do finally have an answer to this question: Does my milkshake bring all the boys to the yard?

Why yes, yes it does…

This, this is a sweet potato pie milkshake. A milkshake born out of my usual weekend laziness. What I really wanted was to bake a pie. And although I am well versed in the pie dough business, I didn’t want to bother with that step. I didn’t want to roll pie dough or bother with any decorative crimping.

I didn’t want flour hand prints on my butt. Oh yea, that happens…

I also didn’t want to bother slicing a piece of pie. Or spooning it in my mouth.

Too much work on a weekend.

And out of this insane laziness, a milkshake was born.

All the components of a pie, sans pie crust rolling are here. There’s a little work involved, you have to sprinkle a sweet potato with sugar and roast it, but seriously – I don’t think your oven will mind. While the sweet potato roasts and chills, take a couple of naps.

Wake from said naps, blend your sweet potato with vanilla ice cream, milk and spices. That’s like 45 seconds of your time. I like to top my milkshakes with another scoop of ice cream, but you can go the whipped cream route.

This milkshake is thick. Sweet potato pie flavor is going to punch you in the throat. But not in a way that makes you stop breathing and lose consciousness or anything. In a good way. You swear you are having pie. Except you’re drinking your pie.

And that dear reader is a milkshake brings all the boys to the yard.

Damn right…

It’s a pie… That you drink!

Ingredients:

For roasting the sweet potato:

  • 1 Medium sized sweet potato, sliced in half
  • 2 Tablespoons of packed light brown sugar
  • Sprinkle of cinnamon

For the milkshake:

  • Chilled roasted sweet potato with the caramel that has gathered in the bottom of the pan
  • 1 1/2 cups of whole milk
  • 3-4 tablespoons of light brown sugar, or to taste
  • 3 scoops of vanilla ice cream
  • 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  • A scoop of vanilla ice cream (optional)
  • Ground cinnamon for sprinkling (optional)

Directions:

To roast the sweet potatoes:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. Scrub and slice the sweet potato in half and sprinkle 1 tablespoon of brown sugar over each half. Sprinkle a light dusting of ground cinnamon.
  3. Place in the oven and roast until the sugar has caramelized and the sweet potato slices have softened and could be easily pierced with a fork, about 35-40 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to come to room temperature. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator or freezer for at least an hour to chill.

For the milkshake:

  1. Remove the chilled sweet potato slices from the refrigerator or freezer. Scoop the flesh onto a small bowl and discard the peel.
  2. Place the sweet potato flesh in a blender, along with the milk, brown sugar, vanilla ice cream, and spices. Blend until smooth. Alternatively, you can place all milkshake ingredients in a bowl and use an immersion hand blender, blending until smooth.
  3. Pour onto 6 oz glasses and top with one more scoop of vanilla ice cream and a dusting of ground cinnamon.
  4. Makes a little more than 3, 6 oz milkshakes. And when I say a little more, I mean I scooped what was left in the bowl into my mouth and didn’t measure.

Preparation plus cooking time for the sweet potato: About 45 minute(s)

Preparation time for the milkshake: About 7 minutes
